Mystical Marriage with a Saint Kenneth Wednesday, August 30, 2017

Question:

Mystical marriages with Our Lord (women religious and consecrated virgins) and with the Church (priests) are, of course, very common. There have been a few instances in Church history of mystical marriages between male religious and Our Blessed Mother. However, there is only one instance that I know of a mystical marriage between a member of the Church on Earth and a Saint, that of a 19th century Frenchman and Saint Philomena. Have there been other such mystical marriages in the history of the Church?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), LTh, DD

Dear Kenneth:

If you are talking about the mystical marriage, or infused contempation, as talked about by St. Teresa of Ávila and St. John of the Cross, the number of people who have been given that gift from God is rare. It is a gift from God and cannot be attained by one's own efforts.

It is estimated that from the earliest centuries there have been only seventy-seven people who have been given that gift (Source: Catholic Encycopedia)

Mystical Marriage is mystical union with God, not to any of the Saints, not even to our Blessed Mother. I have no idea who the 19th Century Saint was. I can find no record of St. Philomena given the gift of mystical marriage.

Also see the article in the Encyclopedia on Contemplation.

You need to give me more specifics, with urls to your sources.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
