Question:

Prior to individual confession, we recited the Confetior. We were then instructed that since we said an act of contrition(?) we need not repeat it in the confessional. I don't see the confetior as an act of contrition, without which there can be no absolution.

Question Answered by Mr. Jacob Slavek

Dear Ed,

Actually in the Rite of Penance the Confiteor is said at that point (or another similar prayer) and the "Prayer of the Penitent" (the Act of Contrition) is omitted during the individual confession.  When the individual confessions are finished, the celebration ends with a prayer of thanksgiving and a blessing.

The recitation of the Act of Contrition is not absolutely necessary for sacramental absolution, rather what is required is a contrite penitent.  Normally though this contrition is expressed with the Act of Contrition in individual confession.

Mr. Slavek
