Re: Reordering the church and book of blessings Father Smith Wednesday, June 1, 2005

Question:

If I may, Mr. Slavek

If writting the Bishop make sure that you are not picking battles that you can't win.

"In the present reordering, the reredeos has gone"

This could have some merit but make sure it was original to the church or possessed artistic quality. Bishops will usually follow the rule "if someone put it in, someone else can take it out"

"the side altars have been removed completely"

This one you will probably not win since the liturgical mind of the Church is that there be only one altar in the building.

"seveal statues appear to have vanished"

Here you can make a case for having them reappear. There is one exception... current liturgical usage only permits one image of a particular saint. Some will take this to the extreme and say a window with an image excludes a statute, others are not so literal.

"perhaps most worrying, the tabernacle, which used to be part of the old reredos, has been relocated in an obscure former aumbry in a wall at the side of the nave (I wanted to pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament, and took several minutes to actually find where it was!)."

This is one you have the best chance of fixing given the mind of the modern Episcopate. From what you describe the Blessed Sacrament is not clearly visible. Knowing that you might not get the tabernacle returned "front and center" take some time and offer some creative ways to have the Blessed Sacrament made more visible.

To the Deacon...

In the Book of Blessings one doesn't have to use the whole liturgy merely the prayer of blessing suffices.

Question Answered by Mr. Jacob Slavek

Dear Father,Thank you for the comments.Mr. Slavek
Footer Notes: (a) A Eucharistic Minister is clergy (Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion). Laity are Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and should never be called Eucharistic Ministers.

(b) There is no such Mass called the Novus Ordo. The Current Mass is the Roman Missal of 2000, or the Oridinary Form of the Mass. The Tridentine Mass is the Roman Missal of 1962, or the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. Please refrain from using the term, Novus Ordo. Thanks.

(c) The titles of Acolyte and Lector belong exclusively to the Installed Offices of Acolyte and Lector, who are men (only) appointed by the Bishop. These roles performed by others are Altar Servers and Readers, respectively.
