Question Title Posted By Question Date
Gloria during Lent Maria Wednesday, March 19, 2008

Question:

Dear Brother,
I know we do not sing the Gloria during Lent. But is the Gloria sung during feast days that fall during the Lent period. Our church choir sang it on March 15 (Saturday - for the feast of St. Joseph).

God Bless

Question Answered by Mr. Jacob Slavek

Dear Maria,

That's okay,  unless you meant that it was sung during the anticipated Sunday Mass, which takes precedence.

The rubrics and GIRM say nothing of omitting the Gloria on solemnities during Lent, only Sundays.  In fact in the Proper of Seasons on each Sunday it specifically says that the Gloria is omitted, but this instruction in not included in the Proper of Saints for St. Joseph, which always falls during Lent.

Mr. Slavek
