Question Title Posted By Question Date
Is this prayer the Linda Wednesday, August 18, 2004

Question:

In other posts questions were asked concerning laypeople not using the exorcism of Pope Leo XII. I have this leaflet from "These Last Days Ministries" entitled "Prayer Against Satan and the Rebellious Angels published by order of H.H. Pope Leo XII" It starts out in small print stating: "The Holy Father exhorts priests to say this prayer as often as possible.....The faithful also may say it in their own name, for the sme purpose, as any approved prayer......It could be used as a solemn exorcism.... to expel the devil. It would then be said by a priest, in the name of the Church and only with the Bishop's permission." The first part consists of a prayer to St. Michael. Then comes the exorcism prayer which starts with a few lines of Psalm 67. After that in small print is :"The crosses indicate a blessing to be given if a priest recitesit, they indicate the Sign of the Cross to be made silently by that person." The first lines of the next prayer are:"We drive you from us, whoever you may be, unclean spirits, all satanci powers, all infernal invaders, all wicked legions, assemblies and sects;....Then there is an invoking of the Holy Cross, Blessed Mother, saints and martyrs. The last part starts:"Thus, cursed dragon, and you, diabolical legions, we adjure you by the living God,+ by the true God, + by the holy God,.......stop deceiving human creatures....

I don't mean to go on and on but is this what was refered to as the exorcism of P. Leo XII? I used to say this prayer but when I read in Fr. Amorth's book something about not using P. Leo's exorcism I stopped.

Thanks, Linda

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM+

Dear Linda:

Yes, that is the long St. Michael Exorcism prayer that outside of a solemn exorcism neither priest or laymen can recite "as is". In order to use that prayer it must be edited.

We do use an edited version of that prayer in our deliverance apostolate, but I do not recommend its general use by the public. Dealing with demonic entities and attempting deliverance is a lot more complicated that merely saying a exorcism prayer. It can, for example, make things worse in some cases. One needs to be prepared and ready before using a prayer like that. This is what we do as Deliverance Counselors -- help a client to be prepared and ready to do the Deliverance that prayer seeks to accomplish.

The kinds of activities and prayers that people can use as "self-help" against demonic harassment is found in our HELP section of our SPCDC website and the Prayer Catalog both linked below.

It is good, and I applaud you, for your loyalty and obedience to stop saying this prayer once you learned about it. Instead, check out the prayers in our Catalog. Although the catalog is not finished there are many prayers in there that you can adapt for your own purposes.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
