Question:

Hello Brother,

I just read that The Exorcism Of Emily Rose deviates from the actual events of the real case which took place in Germany on a girl named Anneliese Michel. The article I read states that the church later acknowledged the case as a form of mental illness rather than demonic possession. Is this true? Also, this article states that the exorcism was successful prior to the woman's death; contrary to the movie depicting that the woman was not freed of the demons prior to her death. Here is the article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anneliese_Michel

Thank you for your insight, and God Bless you and your ministry.

Question Answered by Mr. Joe Meineke

Dear Omar,

The Wikipedia entry states that the German Bishop's Conference declared that Anneliese was mentally ill and not possessed, but it does not cite a reference.  Therefore, all we can say for sure is that the local Ordinary gave permission for an exorcism which at least implies that, in his judgement, there was sufficient evidence to proceed.

As for whether or not she was delivered before her death, I would be more inclined to believe the priests who are reported to have said that she was delivered than I would the movie.  From what I've been able to determine, and as the Wikipedia article states, the movie is not an accurate portrayal of actual events.

I hope that this helps.

God bless you,
Joe Meineke
