Question:

I formally converted to Catholicism recently. My husband and I were going to have our marriage convalidated.  Prior to that I had contact with my childhood sweetheart.  His wife is Wiccan or Satanic.

From September 07 to the present My mother-in-law passed; My husband and I are separted and there are alot of issues there; My brother-in-law raped me (telling me he was Satan, which still has me shaken); My husband took his ring off and was with someone else;

Financially we are a mess, no jobs and behind on everything; My daughter left home and barely speaks to me;things NEVER allowed in our home before are a daily occurance (foul language, ect.).

I blamed [all of this on] my conversion thinking God was punishing me for idolatry and got rid of any Catholic publication/ symbols.  Since then, I have returned and made a good confession, receiving the Eucharist.

I feel like I have been cursed. I prayed the prayers you have listed. I have been suicidal and full of shame and hopelessness. I feel like I am sufficating and I can't stand how bitter I have become!

Does this sound like it could be a Spiritual Attack?  It seems like the closer I drew to God, the worse things became.  I feel abandoned, rejected and alone!

Thanks!

Question Answered by Mr. Joe Meineke

Dear Cathy,

I am very sorry to hear about all of this.  We will certainly pray for you and your situation.

Yes, it does sound spiritual in nature.  Nevertheless, you should seek out the help of a professional counselor, preferably Catholic, who can help you deal with the psychological ramifications of being raped as well as the other issues that you describe.

I am not sure what you mean to convey by including the detail, "Prior to that I had contact with my childhood sweetheart.  His wife is Wiccan or Satanic."  Depending upon what type of contact you are refering to, this could be either inconsequential or very significant.  For example, did you make the wife jealous somehow?  Did you commit some sin with this man and the wife found out?  If so, you need to pray the "Prayer of Confession and Taking Back Ground" in the Spiritual Warfare Catalog (see the link at the bottom of this page) as well as the "Prayer to Break Curses and Spells."

Please know that God has not abandoned you.  No matter how you may 'feel,' right now you need to know that God has not abandoned you because he promises us Sacred Scripture that he NEVER abandons us.

Romans 8:38-39 says, "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Romans 8:28 is a verse that you should memorize and repeat to yourself often.  Namely, "All things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose."  Your situation - all the bad things that are happening and have happened - can work together for your good if you allow it.

If you have the opportunity to be prayed over by a healing priest after a Mass, or if you can go to an actual healing Mass, that would be good and may help.  Also, you should continue doing the 7 Steps for Self Deliverance in the Self-help section on the SPCDC Website.

If these things continue to worsen afer another few months, then you probably need to submit a Help Request to us and perhaps we can help you. The Help Request, when open, is at the bottom of the Help page that is linked below. At the moment, however, we are not accepting new clients.

In the meantime, continue to focus on living a good Catholic life as best you can.  That would include frequent reception of the Eucharist, at least one hour per week in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, at least monthly Confession, developing devotion to patron saints (especially to St. Dymphna who is patron of emotional and spiritual warfare issues), daily prayer and bible reading.  Also pay particular attention to all applicable spiritual warfare prayers in our catalog.

We will be in prayer for you.

God bless you,
Joe Meineke

For information on how to receive help see our Help page. We suggest that before contacting us directly for help you try the Seven Steps to Self-Deliverance. These self-help steps will often resolve the problem. Also our Spiritual Warfare Prayer Catalog contains many prayers that may be helpful. If needed you can ask for a Personal Consultation.
