Rasputin? Mary Sunday, September 6, 2009

Question:

Dear Br. Ignatius Mary,

I realize this might be kind of a crazy question but I've been wondering about it. Do you think its possible that Rasputin was a means of diablolical influence of the Russian Czar and Czarina? He was reportedly a "mystic" or "faith healer", but couldn't he have been an agent of the devil? Or something similar? Photos of him are pretty sinister and creeepy looking. Just wondering.

Thank you and God bless,
Mary

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Mary:

Rasputin was quite a character to say the least. It is hard to get a clear picture of his life since there are so many myths and legends that surround him. He is described as everything from a mystic and saint to the antichrist. His theology was certainly skewed. He believed that sin and repentance were intertwined and necessary for salvation to the point that one should indulge in sin, which he did -- in alcohol and sex.

Rasputin was a very complicated man, a reprobate, a brilliant manupulator, among other traits. Whether or not there was a demonic attachment to him or about him I do not know. One can be like he was without the devil's help. We all have the capacity to be reprobate and even evil all on our own.

I do not recall any more of his history at the moment to say much more. There is certainly a possibility of demonic influence, but I do not know.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
