Question:

In response to Bernice about her Naturopath. A true Naturopath Physician (also called a ND) will be a licensed Physician. If she googles Association of Naturopathic Physicians and then she can search by City and State. All the Physicians that are licensed are listed on this site. There are University's such as Bastyr University in Seattle, where many of these incredible Physicians are graduating from.

If it wasn't for my Doctor in Seattle referring me to a Naturopathic Physician I would either be deathly ill or dead. My own Doctor told me they study very little about nutrition and they are learning how important the science of food alergies and sensitivities are causing serious health problems. Sure enough my Naturopath physician did an extensive blood test on food allergies and sensitivities and as soon as I knew what to take out of my diet (which was more than most people would like to do) I was on my journey to healing! My Naturopath also put me on Nutricuticals that are made by other Naturopaths for healing the body.

This is where each of us can really learn the spirit of our Catholic faith, such as sacrifice, mortification and self denial. Because I have healed and my health is better than it has been in 15 years I feel it's truly been no sacrifice at all. You see I have Celiac Disease and I watched my mother get misdiagnosed for over 15 years and she suffered needlessly because Doctors knew very little about Nutrition and Celiac Disease. My mother also passed away relatively young from complications of Celiac Disease. The gift my mother gave me was for years telling me to stay away from Doctors who just want to put you on Meds anti-depressants. Of course being in my 20's it really meant nothing to me other than she instilled a holy fear of Anti-Depressants. I thank God every day for my mothers warnings. Because I could have gone undiagnosed and ignored very critical health issues that 9 Different Doctors missed and they "all" advised me and issued prescriptions of anti-depressants. My mother knew best and things in the field of nutrition have rapidly changed since her death.

I really have no question other than many of these Naturopaths have new age practices, hindu, budha references in their offices. It seems to get mixed into their field of Medicine. My Naturopath never brought anything up other than a plan of nutrition and natural medicines to heal my intestines and to build my immune system back up.

This is where I have a question. Why not give hope to those who are not Catholic and show them our loving joy of self denial and achieving great health because we follow their instructions for healing. We may have many opportunities to show these people how true Catholics live by their faith!

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Elizabeth:

Thanks for the information and testimony.

As for giving hope to others (Catholic or not), hope comes from knowing the Truth. The Truth is that any system of medicine that incorporates the Eastern (Hindu, Buddhist, Taoism, etc.) philosophies and cosmologies and theories of how the body maintains health, is a major problem. Those philosophies and theories are inconsistent with Christianity, and usually inconsistent with sound science. Unfortunately, the medical community has begun to adopt these techniques from the East, even though they have little to no scientific veracity, and practice them or refer their patients to practitioners. Many hospitals are now running what is essentially New Age medical clinics.

As the old saying goes, "Do not throw the baby out with the bath water", thus we should not indict the whole of many Alternative medical approaches because some of the methods are quackery, or because some of the practitioners of legitimate methods indulge in Eastern nonsense.

We need to be careful to avoid those methods with no scientific veracity (hence my recommendation of Dr. Rosenfeld's book).

With methods that may have some usefulness we need to be very wary of practitioners who incorporate the Eastern trappings and philosophies. Those who do that will be necessarily tainted in their medical judgment.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
