Question Title Posted By Question Date
Could a blessed sacramental ever be tainted by sin? James Friday, October 2, 2009

Question:

A few years ago, I met a woman on a online Catholic prayer forum. She seemed to be a very devout Catholic which attracted her to me. We became online friends and eventually talked on the phone. At some point our conversations became sexual and she said she wanted to have phone sex with me, which I agreed to. It led me to masturbation several times. She sent me a Rosary (which she claimed turned gold) and a Brown Scapular. She claimed they were both blessed by a priest. The relationship became very peculiar and she started becoming more and more controlling until I cut off all contact with her.

I put the Rosary and Scapular in a drawer and pretty much forgot about them. Lately I have learned of the benefits of the Brown Scapular and the way of living associated with it. I would like to wear the Scapular and follow its precepts, but I am leery of wearing the Scapular that was sent to me by that woman with whom I sinned on several occasions... Can the Scapular and/or the Rosary be tainted by the sin that was part of the relationship that brought them to me?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear James:

There is probably nothing to worry about if she is telling the truth that the scapular and rosary were blessed by a priest.

There is no problem, however, in you having the items blessed by a priest yourself. That way you will know for sure they are blessed, and if there is anything attached to them, the blessing will take care of that.

God bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
