What do I do John Thursday, January 7, 2010

Question:

I am a very "die hard Catholic" involved in church ministry. The problem that I am having is that I am addicted to porn and have been secretly visiting sex shops. I have had sexual encounters with other men at these places and after, I feel a deep guilt almost to the point of wanting to end my life. I pray everyday and there are times when I do fight these urges and "win the battle." But at times I have fallen and this really depresses me. What can I do to continue fighting this vice and to have victory in my life?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear John:

You are not alone. There are many men and women, including church workers, ministry staff, religious, and priests who are addicted to sexual sins.

You need to battle this with self-discipline, staying away from the near occasion of sin, place programs like Covenant Eyes on your computer, join a support group, and frequent the Sacrament of Confession, even weekly if necessary.

You have to change your thinking and have the courage to work hard. All sexual sins begin in the mind. St. Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 10:5 -- "We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete."

We have a support group here on this site. The Catholic Support Group for Sexual Addictions Recovery (CSGSAR) was founded in 1998 and was the first such site for Catholics on the Internet.

We had some 500 people in our group, but just moved our online Support Group to a new Discussion Group software this week, and thus we are still building up membership on the new software and still under construction on some of the helpful articles.

I would encourage you to join CSGSAR.

God loves you. It is possible to bring this addiction to recovery and even healing and to live a chaste life according to your state-in-life.

We will be praying for you.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
