What might be happening here? CJ Wednesday, September 1, 2004

Question:

Hello,
I was born in the USA. I now live in another country and have developed a closer relationship with God. I go to mass, sometimes even during the week and say the rosary and belong to a rosary group. There is also the benefit of access to Blessed Sacrament in exposition, which I visit from time to time.

In trying to get my own life back on track, I get opposition from my family back home. My brother doesn't go to church and believes he doesn't need it. He tells me I don't need it either. He also smokes pot and drinks to excess. My mother thinks that holy water and the rosary are just superstition and that abortion is acceptible. Every time I come home for a visit something bad happens which threatens to split the family apart.

First time the fighting between my brother and his wife intensified and ended in divorce. The next time while his children were visiting my sister and her daughter (then 4), they killed the four year old's guinea pig. No one would own up, but my sister and I are pretty sure it was one of my brother's kids. One of the children pretended the little animal was a horse and rode it. When my sister went to put it back in the cage, it went belly up. She took it to the vet but it was too late. One of the ribs had punctured a lung and it filled up with blood. My mother would not accept that it could be one of my brother's kids.

The year before last, my mother's house burnt down. My nephew was at the side of the house lighting fireworks with his friend. He was told beforehand not to do that without supervision. A spark landed on the wooden back porch and lit the gas escaping from the gas grille my brother left on. I will stop with this.

But even my brother says to me 'everytime you come home, something bad happens.' I would feel hurt about this, but it is really true.

Are we just at odds because I am the only one that goes to church and prays now? Or is there something else 'helping' these bad things to happen when I visit?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM+

Dear CJ:

I praise God that your have developed a closer relationship with God. Given that, the problems with your family is not unusual. Jesus Himself said that He did not come to bring peace, but division. He then describes how families are ripped apart because of Him.

It is a aspect of human nature for people who are not godly to oppose those who are trying live the Christ-Life. In addition to this, given that demons love to hitchhike on problems that already exist, it is certainly possible that what is a normal human weakness is being exploited by demons to make these worse than they have to be in order to discourage you and even to try to destroy your relationship with God.

You must never allow your family or the devil to bring you to a place that you abandon your relationship with God.

The normal human weaknesses that lead people to put down those who live for God is something that may not change. You can express your concern that you do not appreciate this treatment from your family members, but you cannot make them treat you differently. This is something that you may have to accept and offer up the suffering from that to God for the conversion of your family members.

In terms of the possible demonic aspect, I would advise that you pray the Hedge Protection of Protection for yourself, a breaking of curses, and a prayer to ask God to rebuke and cast away demons of division, accidents, family discord, etc. (make a list of the attributes of things that are going on. These may be possible demons and refer to them in the prayer by their attributes).

These prayers can be found in the SW Prayer Catalog linked below.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
