guidelines for identifying Julie Monday, January 18, 2010

Question:

Hi Brother Ignatius,

In several posts you mention that a person should scrutinize their life to identify and get rid of any "hooks" that might continue to cause problems or attract demonic attention. Do you have any guidelines or suggestions on how one should go about systematically identifying and eliminating "hooks"? (I have learned a lot by reading your answers, and I now know that something I might not have previously considered to be problematic or dangerous very much can be!)

Thank you.

Julie

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Julie:

I would recommend you read our Seven Steps to Self-Deliverance, linked below. That article answers your question and advises what to do about it.

Essentially a "hook" is anything that demons can use as an excuse to hang on to your life. The really big hooks are things like Pride, Unforgiveness, Occult Involement, a past abortion, and other major sins. Remember, even when a sin is forgiven in the Sacrament of Confession, the consequences of that sin may remain. One consequence is a possible "hook".

A hook can also be something rather trivial, like seeing a palm reader at a carnival when you were seven years old. The demons do not care how trivial the hook is, or whether or not you were responsible for the act that created the hook. All they care about is that a hook exists to give them the excuse to hang on.

We need to renounce all hooks in our lives, even the ones created in our innocence when we were children. The Seven Steps helps to identify hooks and to renounce them.

Then, if the self-help procedure does not resolve issues, a personal consultation, or formal counseling, may be in order. In the formal counseling we go into considerable more detail on these issues. Potential clients fill out a 26 page questionnaire. This questionnaire is designed to find every cotton-pickin' hook in a person's life.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
