Can this cause harm or is it just a superstition? Louise Sunday, September 5, 2004

Question:

Bro. Ignatious;

After my sister was born she had a cerebral hemmorage. My Aunts blamed the "evil eye" that they thought was put on her by another Aunt (their sister) because she couldn't visit the baby. So they took regular cooking oil and let it drop into a bowl of water. They felt they were casting away the evil. I don't know if they used any prayer or what. They continued to do this until the drops of oil somehow showed that the evil was gone and my sister got well.

My mother didnt believe this at all and she had my sister baptized right after birth because of her condition. She also prayed and placed a Miraculas Medal in her crib. When my sister got well, she felt her prayers were answered and it had nothing to do with what my Aunts did.

My question is were my Aunts invoking the devil in what they were doing or was it just some silly supersition? I used to think that the Evil Eye was just a superstition but after reading Fr. Amorth's book I found out it was a spell or hex that one can put on another by invoking the devil.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM+

Dear Louise:

Your Aunts were at best performing a totally superstitious folk remedy and at worst, maybe without them knowing it, performing a witchcraft spell.

The Baptism of the infant probably dispelled any harmful effect of the spell from your Aunts. If there is no other evidence of demonic harassment, paranormal activity, or signs of curses interfering with this child's like or the mother, then I wouldn't worry about it.

If you wish, you and your mother, could pray a prayer asking God to remove any spells or curses placed upon your sister or our household. The SW Prayer Catalog linked below has prayers you can use.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
