Spiritual Attacks? Gift of Pain?	Pia	Friday, May 21, 2010
Question: Hello and thank you much for this website!! It is such a blessing! I pray that you can help me and my friend with our question(s). Thank you! I have a friend who is very Catholic and gifted with many gifts of the Spirit. He is also very prone to spiritual attacks, and phenomena that we don't quite understand fully and would like more explanation of. Here is an example: the other day he was at a local chain restaurant and there were people nearby in the bar section cursing and drinking...everything became highlighted to him--the music was really loud to him, and the cursing and he felt it kept getting louder and louder and he checked to see if he had his rosary and he didn't so he felt highly annoyed and freaked out... the whole room felt like it was spinning and he felt like he could feel everyone's anger, and anxiety until he felt like he "snapped"--he describes it as waves of emotion. He had to leave the situation. He went to his car and felt a lot of pain in his heart, he was shaking and he was wondering why he was feeling like that and if there was something wrong with him--he felt so overwhelmed with the feelings and couldn't explain it but thought it was probably an attack of some sort. He called me and we prayed over the phone in tongues and English asking Jesus to deliver Him...then as we were praying it felt like the emotions or the movement shifted and it turned into a time of healing for him involving deep sobs and just release of a time of deep hurting--he explained this to me and it was clear it was for his healing. He is curious what this all means and how to protect himself, or understand the gift or the attack or how to know which it is. There are other times when he feels nautious around certain people, he feels a thick, what he assumes is an evil presence around them. Also, there are times when he feels a deep sadness, not brought on from anything inside of him but almost for others--we once prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet through this and i felt like it was the "gift of pain" which i had heard of--but wondering if this is true, or if so what exactly it is--is he being a suffering soul with Jesus for others? Also, it seems the Holy Spirit is revealing that there is a major curse on his family or something in his ancestry that has to do with all of these things.... Can you please offer any advice? Sorry that's a lot of questions, but we greatly appreciate any assistance and advice you can give! Thank you for this website it is such a gift!! God bless you!
Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM Dear Pia: Well, what you describe in the restaurant sounds more like a panic attack than anything spiritual. His experience in the restaurant is also similar for someone who has psychiatric problems. A Spiritual Gift does not effect a person in that way. There are those who have the Gift of Discernment to discern the presence of spirits that could explain his sensing evil around people. I believe I have this gift, directly associated with what God has called me to do in deliverance ministry. This gift has more to do with discerning a spirit of error from a spirit of truth, but also involves discerning the presence of evil in a situation. People without this Gift, however, will also be able to discern, on a lessor basis, the presence of evil in a place or person because of the presence of the Holy Spirit within them. There is no gift of pain that is identified in Scripture or the in the writings of the Saints that I am aware of. There is, however, the existence of "suffering souls". A suffering soul does not take on others' pain. That is a "new age" idea. Rather, a suffering soul is person who suffers chronically from whatever ailment he has and uses his suffering to lift up to God for the salvation and healing of others, especially those in purgatory. Often suffering souls make what is called a Heroic Act of Charity. This heroic act is where the person "offers to God, for the benefit of the souls in purgatory, all the works of satisfaction he or she will perform during life, and all the suffrage that will come to him or her after death." Other than the possibility of a psychiatric problem and/or panic attacks, a clue that a demonic attack could be causing at least some of what your friend is experiencing is in what you said about the possibility of a family curse of some sort. Your friend should follow the Seven Steps to Self-Deliverance, plus pray some of the prayers in our Spiritual Warfare Prayer Catalog, such as the Renouncement of Ancestral Sins, Breaking Curses and Spell, and the Hedge prayers of protection.
