Experience at prayer service Maria Thursday, September 23, 2010

Question:

Hello Brother,

Thank you for this website!

About 20 years ago, I had an experience at an Assemby of God service that I would like your thoughts on. At the time, I was a fallen away Catholic, who wanted to get things right with God. My boyfriend at the time had (as well as many friends from church who went to this church) had invited me to go. I have a lazy eye, so they were praying that my eyes be healed. I went on a couple of occasions.

At a particular service, however, there was a visiting preacher. I am sure you can imagine how things progressed, ending with an altar call. My friends insisted (really against my will) that I go up for my "healing". This preacher laid hands on me, prayed, pushed my head back, and started laughing. I asked why he was laughing at me; my friends responded that he was laughing in the Spirit because the yoke had been removed.

That is NOT what I heard, however. I head Satan himself laughing at me. It was the most scary experience. At that moment, I felt as close as one can get to despair without falling in. I could not understand how I could have such a desire to find my way back to God yet be laughed at by Satan.

I was afraid to tell anyone about this, but finally told my boyfriend and his mother, who told me that God sometimes lets people hear different things for different reasons. We did not return to that church. In fact, soon after, my boyfriend and I were married in the Catholic church, and he is now a deacon.

Over the course of my life, I have had several experiences (not all demonic) but have never really spoken with anyone about them. As I said, this one happened about 20 years ago. The memories of these experiences are so vivid, however.

What are your thoughts on this particular experience, and do you think there would be any benefit to talking to a spiritual father (if I can ever find one) about them now? Thank you for your time.

Question Answered by

Dear Maria:

I praise God that you returned to the Church and were married in the Church.

The Assemblies of God, and other charismatic groups, flirt with a lot of danger. Their theology is seriously flawed and by that they risk demonic involvement in what they do. The "laughing" incident is a good example of this.

I would recommend reading the essay, which is actually an excerpt from the Rule of St. Michael called, Charism Gifts Building Up the Church. This essay lists the pros and cons of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, lists thirty spiritual gifts identified in Scripture, and details "Pentecostalisms" that contaminate many Catholic charismatic groups.

The "speaking in tongues" for example can easily be a demonic counterfeit. I give examples in this essay.

The Pentecostals, of which the Assemblies of God are part, should be avoided. It was good that you did not return to that "church".

If you have had no harassments since then, you can just put this down as an experience. If there has been any harassments then you need to renounce going up to be allegedly healed by this preacher. Prayers are found in the Spiritual Warfare Prayer Catalog linked below.

You need not be afraid to reveal these things, at least to me. There is little I haven't heard before, and I am experienced in discerning such matters.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
