Question:

My husband has been having a great deal of trouble sleeping and feels like the devil comes to him and tells him to do things. This has been going on for years. He says that he thinks it's dead people or an evil spirit telling him to kill himself of to hurt me. He also states that he thinks he is stronger than the spirit, but that he must have done something wrong in his life to allow this to happen.

He will go see a mental health professional for evaluation, but he really feels that this problem is spiritual.

Last night when he would fall into a lucid dream like state he would talk in a deep voice and would say scary things like I am going to choke you now, and when I would finally get him awake he would look frightened and was sweaty. He has no memory of the time that he was sleep like. He told me that he is scared and thinks that whatever it is might be able to kill him.

I am not really sure what to do to help him, but I am starting to fear for my safety. I know that during an awake period he would never hurt anyone, but when he is sleeping he is not himself. He is constantly yelling no, no, no, and when I pray outloud he tells me to stop that I am making it worse. I don't know what else to do, please help.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)

Dear Caroline:

I am sorry to hear about your husband. If the psychiatric evaluation does not reveal anything significant, then this may indeed be demonological in nature. He needs to ask for help from a deliverance counselor.

I would recommend that he begin the Seven Steps to Self-Deliverance linked below. If, after doing that for two or three months, there is no improvement, then he may need to ask for a Personal Consultation.

Both of you may avail yourselves of the prayers in our Spiritual Warfare Prayer Catalog, such as the Hedge Prayer of Protection and the Rebuking Particular Spirits.

Your husband is right in that praying may make things worse temporarily, but that is to be expected. If there are demons involved then those demons are not going to want to leave. They will increase their harassments and attack in an attempt to get you and your husband to stop praying. Thus, this increase in harassment is a good sign. It means that you are doing the right thing.

Perseverance is the key. Demon will fight kicking and screaming to prevent being kicked out. You and your husband need to continue to go to Mass, to pray, to live a good Christian life in spite of any demonic tantrums. Persevere.

We will be praying for you, and will include your husband in our next Proxy Deliverance in November whereby our Prayer Warrior Team gets together to pray for deliverance for various people.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
