First hand knowledge of a Ghost Hunting tv show Jim Sunday, November 14, 2010

Question:

Hi Brother Ignatius

I'm just writing in response to a recent post by Renee on Nov 8 to you about Paranormal State.

I am friends with a couple of people from one of the famous television ghost hunting shows on the si fi channel. I can attest that these folks are extremely honest and genuine and that nothing is faked, but they have recently been taken off the show because the production company didn't think they were dramatic enough for tv. They've been with the show from the beginning a few years ago. Even though nothing is faked, the television company does want more drama. These friends of mine were in a disagreement with this company to spice things up, so they got booted.

I am not a ghost hunter, I do not believe in it. It is all demonic. As much as I try to explain this, it's like spitting in the wind. I love these folks, but I'm afraid they will learn the hard way.

There is also this prevelant belief in residual haunts, which is rediculous. Even another good friend of mine who is an elder in her presbyterian church believes in this, and I keep telling these friends of mine there is no such thing and it's all intelligent -- from the bad guy and to not be fooled. It's so frustrating.

I do watch paranormal state from time to time and it's aggravating that they have a priest come in to help them, but I'm pretty sure he's an SSPX priest. It's utterly distressing. A true priest has no business helping with this confusion.

I've accompanied my friends from the tv show on 2 separate occasions because they asked me to come along. I went, attesting that I have no intention to hunt or record, but went to pray. I wanted them to not go without some aid (as foolish as that is), but I won't go anymore. They've invited me since and they say I don't have to "investigate", but I won't. I was invited on Halloween, but their plans fell apart for that "event". These people are ghost hunters regardless of the show, which is why they were picked. All I can do is pray for them. The one from the tv show actually was disappointed when on one investigation over seas this person was at the "gate of hell" and nothing showed up when provoking. I told this person it's good that nothing happened and that it wasn't the best idea in the first place.

Dear Lord. This is the new culture. No one learns from history, and especially from Salvation history. They are very well meaning people, and very sweet and good, but misguided. It's an inclusion of Paganasim, Christianity and Asian philosophy.
The one investigation I went on, there was actual activity. Not good. All I did was pray and fortunately the activity stopped. You'll probably think I was an idiot for going in the first place, but I, in vain, wanted to change their mind about investigating, but it's their self appointed mission into the pit of foolishiness.

I pray for them at mass all the time. I praise Christ that I know better.

Jim

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)

Dear Jim:

Well, you confirm what I said, that TV ratings will effect what is seen on the shows. Anyone who will not conform to the pressures of the production companies to produce more dramatic footage will be out.

I was approached by the History Channel once, but refused to provide them with what they wanted. Most media has little interest in me since I do not embellish things to make them more dramatic.

Regardless of good intentions by these ghost hunting people on TV, they all have it all wrong and they do things that are stupid, arrogant, and dangerous.

The theology of these groups are utterly incorrect. A good example of this is the so-called theory of "cold spots". The notion, coming largely from the Ed and Lorraine Warren, is that spirits must extract energy from our material world to manifest in our world. This is nonsense. We learn in theology 101 that spirits (angels, demons, human spirits) are non-material. That means that spirits are not dependent upon the material world for anything. The idea that they must extract energy from the material world is total nonsense.

For similar reasons the ideas of "portals" from which spirits must pass through to get to our dimension is equal nonsense. Angels, demons, human spirits do not exist in a different dimension. Physicists speculate that the universe may have as many as 10 dimensions and not just the four dimensions we live in (the 4th is time/space). But, the point is these dimensions are construct of the material world. The material world will cease to exist someday, but the spiritual world is forever.

No spirit has to use anything from the material world to manifest, to travel, or to pass through in order to interact with that material world.

Then, are the techniques of these group, which are flawed and sometimes even dangerous:

  • Provocation: is dangerous beyond words
  • Frank's Box: is uttering ridiculous
  • EVPs: EVPs have never been convincing and can be explained by normal functioning of the brain to seek order out of chaos. And the "presence" of some voice is heard by others usually only after they have been told by the first observer what it allegedly said. This is a phenomena of the way the brain works and suggestion.
  • Photography: Photography is the same as EVPs. The human brain tries to see order out of chaos. This is why we can see shapes in clouds or star formations, or the Virgin Mary in a potato chip.
  • Use of occult means: such as Ouija Boards, séances, dowsing rods, psychic impressions, witchcraft, and other occult techniques and persons who only serve to make things worse for any of their clients who are actually suffering from demonic infestations.
  • Use of other problematic people: such as using excommunicated priests and bishops, so-called "experts", such as Lorraine Warren and her protégés, who operate on false theories ans theologies.

Paranormal State is one of the worst. The only show I can think of at the moment worse that Paranormal State is Ghost Adventures. In both of these shows, the "investigators" are idiot children with an arrogance and pride that rivals Satan himself. They have no idea whatsoever as to what they are doing, and what they do is beyond dangerous.

As for Residual Hauntings, such a things does not exist as defined by these ghost hunters. Actually, Cody Polston, Founder and President of the Southwest Ghost Hunter's Association, gives a very good and succinct scientific explanation of why the Residual Haunting is implausible: Residual hauntings, a flawed hypothesis

For a discussion of possible "ghostly" like phenomena based a phenomenological analysis anchored upon the Bible and solid theology see the article, Seven Kinds of Ghosts.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
