The Rite ( Movie) Debbie Friday, February 4, 2011

Question:

I saw the movie "The Rite" today with my daughter. which is supposedly based on true experience, and have ordered the book. Is this an accurate depiction of exorcism? Can the demon actually kill someone, or at least cause such physical problems that lead to death? Would God allow that? Can a priest/exorcist become possessed himself if he despairs over losing someone in this way?

Fr Gary Thomas , the priest who the movie is based on is a pastor of a parish not far from the parish where I work.

Here is a link to an interview with him.

Can the devil really tell the future like when he told the possessed child that the priests father would die the next day?

When you strip away the Hollywood stuff is the movie more or less accurate

Dear Debbie:

I have not seen the movie so I cannot comment on it. I have only glanced at the book. From what I understand the book is good and I do intend to read it, and if it is indeed good, perhaps include it in our training program for Deliverance Counselors. Fr. Thomas seems to think the movie is good (given a few artistic license in a few parts).

As to your question about a demon knowing the future, the answer is no. A demon in his bravado may declare with arrogance that he knows the future, but he does not. No one knows the future except God and those to whom God reveals it. Neither angels, nor demons, nor humans know the future.

Demons can predict future events like anyone one else. The more you know about the variables in someone's life and the events around them the more accurate one can be in their prediction. But, prediction is not knowledge. Prediction is a guess. The more variables one knows, the more accurate, or even educated, the guess, but it is still a guess.

A couple married for sixty years may be able to "predict" with a degree of accuracy what the spouse may do tomorrow. That knowledge is based upon the spouse knowing his partner so well as to make an educated and rather accurate guess; but it is still a guess.

Because demons know more about us and the events that surround us far better than we ever could, they can make some pretty accurate guesses. Remember, however, a guess is a guess, not fore-knowledge.

Never fear. Demons cannot know your future nor anyone's.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
