Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r) Dear Ray: Well, that post pretty much says it. Generational demonization (or curses) are not passed on to succeeding generations in a manner like biological genetics. Rather the sins of ancestors may have placed a family line on the devil's radar. This means the devil is particularly watching this family more than the average family for opportunities to attack. If there are no opportunities presented by a particular generation of the family, or by a particular member of the family, then the devil does not have an entry point. This is why the harassment or curse can seem to skip generations or effect some members of the family and not others. Now, do not misunderstand, having the devil keep a special watch on a family is a serious thing. With such scrupulous observation the devil will find any vulnerability that may be present. While the exorcism in the Baptismal Rite removes at that moment any demonic attachments to the individual, and confession and Eucharist help to maintain freedom from demonic attachment, those things do not guarantee it. If that were the case then St. Paul would not have warned us to always be on guard for the devil's schemes (2 Cor 2:11; Eph 6:11). We must always be on guard every moment of our life. We need to keep the Hedge of Protection God gives us always in repair, with the gate closed and locked. If we punch any holes in the hedge by our own sins they must be repaired. If other people punch holes in our hedge, they must be repaired. This is why I recommend to all Christians to pray the Hedge Prayer for Protection of Household if one has a family, the Hedge Prayer for Protection of Self if single, and all people pray the Prayer Of Renunciation Of Ancestral Sins. None of us have any idea what our parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents may have done in secret, thus each member of each generation ought to pray that Renunciation prayer. If there is a suspicion of a family curse then pray Breaking Household Curses and Spells or the Breaking Personal Curses and Spells as applicable. As our first Pope, St. Peter said, (1 Peter 5:8) "Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking some one to devour." God Bless, Bro.
