Question:

Whenever I seem to be making a little progress in getting past years of mental and physical problems I get socked with new or recurrent physical symptoms. Then I can't think of anything else and make myself miserable again. I just found your site and have run off the things I can do for myself but it all seems so gray and bleak. My faith is very weak at this point -- I can't believe God cares and sometime even that he exists. I am constantly harrassed by negativity. I come from a family that has generations of darkness in it's relationships -- much unhappiness, illness, suicide etc. I feel trapped and unable to get free of it. Help.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)

Dear Laurie:

God loves you and cares for you deeply. God is not a liar. He tells us that He loves us and will never abandon us. He keeps His promises.

What you should probably do is check with your doctor concerning a possible depression. Medications can do wonders to break depression.

Second, the best way to grow in your faith is to live it -- even when you do not feel like it. That is what Mother Teresa did and it made her a saint.

Go to Mass frequently. Receive the Sacraments frequently. Read the Bible. Do daily devotions.

I would recommend that you follow the Seven Steps to Self-Deliverance linked below. Also, use prayers from the Spiritual Warfare Prayer Catalog, especially Prayer of Control Thoughts, Hedge Prayer of Protection, Renunciation of Ancestral Sins, and the Rebuking of Particular Spirits (e.g., spirits of depression, darkness, unhappiness, illness, suicide, etc.).

God is with you and loves you. Remember that faith is about a decision of will and not a feelings. Feelings can come and go, but faith abides forever. Do not look to your emotions, but upon every word of God, every promise of God, every counsel of our Lord.

I also recommend that you meditate upon Psalm 23 and upon the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-16).

We will be praying for you.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
