Question:

I really liked the answer you gave Jacob concerning certain types of music. Would you also apply this to hip hop music? I have a lot of friends who listen to this kind of music and they all make fun of me when I explain to them my reasons for not listening to hip hop/rap. The lyrics mention sex, violence, drugs, and also make use of filthy curse words. I personally don't consider rap as music. How can this not be inspired by satan? I completely agree with you on the extreme care one should take in listening to music. God Bless

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)

Dear Ron:

We must first establish that Rap is not music (and the modern day Rappers did not invent it). Ray Charles, who knows a thing or two about music and music from the black tradition in particular, once said in response to hearing about Rap, "What have you done to yourselves my children?"

On the Johnny Carson Show, when Charles was about to turn 60, he was diplomatic, but still maintained that Rap was not real music.

The lyrics of most Rap is downright evil and actually racist. Rappers say that what they Rap about is the way it is in the black community. BULL! The majority of Black people are not living in the perversion represented by Rap. Most people are good people.

Satan loves any music and/or lyrics that is perverted, evil, appeals to the base instincts of sex, power, drugs, and/or rebellion (which a lot of Rock does this), or otherwise is an affront to good morals and to God.

By the way, the term Rock and Roll, was originally a euphemism for sex.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
