Question:

Dear Brother,

I am a Catholic revert. For a long time I had been doing so well, going to church and all, then demons got into me and for a while (about a year and a half) I stopped going and behaved ridiculously - going to an Eastern temple, playing Ouija, and so on. I have been back for almost two years.

My Catholic boyfriend shouted at me to go back to church - "Do you know how sacred that place is?" and so on. I thought he was being horrible, but it was for my own good.

My faith is now stronger. The problem is I love scary movies such as Trick or Treat and Prom Night. They have nice romance, and good always overcomes evil. (I avoid movies in which people are dressed in a way that would not please the Lord). When my boyfriend found out about the movies I watch he said not the best idea for someone with my demonic troubles. I listened, but one night a scary movie came onto the TV, I was bored and I watched - and when I admitted it, he was not impressed, and I got quite a lecture. I used to play a game called Plants VS Zombies, cartoon form, and I thought it was fun - he told me to stop that, too. (A bit gory). He is no sober socks, and can be very funny - but he is not joking about things that need to be stopped.

A long time ago my mother caught me watching televangelists on the TV, and screamed to put that trash off, to stick to Vatican shows rather than weirdos. When I was away from church and going to temple, my best friend could see I was not myself. Behind my back she prayed for me, and was delighted when I returned to church. She has helped me with spiritual books to keep me entertained, but if I am bored acceptable entertainment seems so limited.

Blessings,
Cass

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)

Dear Cass:

Your boyfriend is correct. It is foolish of you to watch these movies. Once a person has been demonized they become like a recovering alcoholic who needs to stay away from bars and parties with alcohol. For you to watch these movies is an invitation to the demons to grab you. Stop it.

These types of movies are not good for anyone, but for someone who has had demonological problems in the past, it is critical for them to stay away from such films, TV shows, music, games, and books.

St. Paul teaches us:

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honorable, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. (Philippians 4:8)

St. Ignatius of Loyola in his Constitutions wisely teaches:

All should take care to guard with great diligence the gates of their senses (especially the eyes, ears, and tongue) from all disorder, to preserve themselves in peace and true humility of their souls...

It matters what images and information we put into our brains. What we put in, the devil can sift like wheat in our imaginations.

If you are bored there are many things you can do rather than watch these inappropriate movies. There are games like Yahtzee and other board games, cards, Chinese checkers, and 100s of others. A good past-time is to read a good novel. The Michael O'Brien novels are exciting.

As human beings we are not enslaved by our passions, desires, and wants. We can rise above all that and do what is right regardless of passions, desires, and wants. You need to kick the habit of these types of movies. That may be hard. These other entertainments may seem boring to you. As you discipline yourself and ween yourself off of these movies, these other entertainments will look better to you.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
