Question:

Can you explain to me what the misconceptions are that the film The Exorcist has in it? I saw in an earlier answer that you said it has some but as of yet can't find a one that says what they are yet. Thanks.

I watched the movie The Rite and want to know if the following are true:

-The guy playing the priest in one of the exocerisms said the frog in the pillow [which the boy was sleeping on when he got the bad dreams was satan] unlikely?

-how often are demons honest if felt like they were too honest too much to me.

-can a demon bend a rosary or just a cross without even touching it or can they not even really touch them?

Do you know of any other things in it that were false [i know the upside down crosses being bad are false]?

Question Answered by

Dear Jonne:

I have not seen the movie, The Exorcist, in thirty years and I do not wish to ever see it again.

I highly recommend to all Christians not to see this film, or if they have not to see it again. The nature of the film can cause doors to be open or can cause triggers for some people that may cause demonic attacks.

As for its accuracy, obviously the head turning 360 degree is not possible. Most of the rest of the phenomena is possible, but is rarely seen in one case.

If I remember correctly, and I may be thinking of another movie, the priest does not attempt to take the demon upon himself to free the possessed person.

I am sorry, but I just do not remember enough of the movie to give a specific review.

As for The Rite, I have not seen this movie at all. It has just been released recently. The book, The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist, is good and accurate. Hollywood usually does some exaggerating, but I believe the author of the book said that the movie was generally good. Keep in mind the movie is not a documentary, but "is inspired by a true story", which in Hollywood language can mean anything.

As to your questions, again I have not seen the movie, but I can answer generically. We know from the Bible that demons can infest animals, so it possible for a frog can be infested with a demon. Also demons can attach themselves of inanimate objects, such as toys, statues, pictures, games, or any other object.

Demons are liars by nature. One can never trust what a demon says. In a solemn exorcism, however, a demon can be forced to tell the truth under the power of God has commanded by the exorcist.

Demons can effect the material world and thus cause physical effects, such as knocking a cross off the wall, causing it, or any other object to "float" across the room, or break objects.

The idea of "touching" an object does nor really apply since demons are spirits and do not have physical bodies. Their powers are preternatural according to the abilities natural to their species (angels, fallen).

For example, I have had a bottle removed from my hand and thrown across the room by an invisible (demonic) force.

Since I have not seen the movie I cannot speak to anything specifically. The upside down cross is the symbol of St. Peter. True Satanists do not use an upside down cross. Usually it is only teenagers dabbling in the occult who may use an upside down cross as an occult symbol. Hollywood may use it because they think it is an occult symbol, which it is not.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
