Question: Dear Brother Ignatius Mary, I hope you are well. My question is regarding a paranormal experience that I had approximately 14 years ago, before I returned to the Catholic Church, which to this day I do not understand the "why" of and at that time in my endeavours to try and find the answer or explanation for the phenomena led me into some pretty dangerous territories. I was a graduate student at the university and one Friday morning in April (bet. 10am-11am) I attended a lecture given by a visiting Professor from Sweden. Attendence at this lecture was restricted to students and faculty.The talk centered around the latest research being done on the human brain. As the lecture progressed I was suddenly distracted - from the corner of my eye, maybe a few feet upwards, I saw huge clouds of "smoke". I turned and looked at these smokey clouds wondering where they were coming from since they were suspended in air and were growing larger. As I looked at these clouds a figure started to slowly materialize from the clouds - first the head, then the body just up to the waist. I recognized the man, it was Benjamin Franklin. He just looked at me not saying anything, anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes, then he started to slowly vanish together with the cloud. To say the least I was disturbed - apparently I was the only one who saw this. I still do not understand why I saw this - can really see no explanation .... it certainly did not have anything to do with the lecture that I was attending. Any comments or insights that you may have regarding this phenomena would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.
Question Answered by Dear Irene: There can be several causes of such as experience. There is no way for me to know which cause applies. Possibilities are: psychiatric issues stress excessive fatigue (students often do not get enough sleep) dozing during the lecture (in a semi-sleep state. This can be a semi-hypnotic state) demonic attack If this only happened once, and of no other paranormal or demonic experience occurred, then one of the other explanations are likely. Stress and lack of proper sleep can put you into a brief hypnotic state, like it is with the hiway-hypnosis experience. This may last only a brief moment, but can include an experience like yours. If this was a demonic attack, the devil may have been trying to scare you or lure you to try to explain the experience by researching things you ought not research. You mentioned that your research to explain this "led me into some pretty dangerous territories". I praise God that you were not caught in those "dangerous territories."
