Question:

Brother Ignatius, in regards to, “Anatomy of Hate” Charles’ Question on Monday, August 09, 2004, may I suggest to Charles to get a copy of “BACK TO VIRTUE” by Peter Kreeft.

In Chapter Ten, he deals with those driven by anger, and the meek, and I quote:

“…This is why hatred is not one of the seven capital sins, as Saint Thomas explains: it is not the source of further sins because it is as bad as you can get; it is the last stage of sin, the satanic stage. Satan is pure hatred, as God is pure love.

This is the reason why it is crucial to distinguish anger (the non-sinful kind), which as we have seen, is in God himself, while hate is not in God but is in Satan. If we do not clearly distinguish anger from hatred, then we do not clearly distinguish God from Satan!

The difference is that hatred wills evil to its object, while anger sometimes wills good…”

Kreeft goes on to make a distinction between the four levels of anger:
1. Just the simple emotion of anger.
2. Anger, if regulated by reason, can turn into the will for justice and correction.
3. When the emotion of anger oversteps the boundaries of proper reason, it turns into the capital sin of anger. This is described by Saint Thomas in this fashion, this form of anger is now the desire to punish the person (the target of the anger) “who has not deserved it, or beyond his deserts, or contrary to the order prescribed by law, or not for the due end, namely the maintaining of justice and the correction of fault.”
4. Anger now turns into hatred of God or neighbor.

“Hatred’s completest expression is “Damn you!””

Until we get the “Anatomy of Hate” up and going, perhaps this can frame a point of view for Charles.

Est autem fides credere quod nondum vides; cuius fidei merces est videre quod credis - Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe. (St. Augustine)

Dear Francis:

This is a REAL good summary of the issue of anger.

How about you work on the introductory material for me for the site Anatomy of Hate. )

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
