Question:

Hi there,
I have a friend who has 'a gift'..I hate to call her psychic as it sounds so New Age and against the Church. I read your definition of both 'seer' and 'sensitive' and believe they both describe her. She can see things from the past and present and can also feel things. She sensed a demonic presence in my sister's home (my sister has been telling me of the things that were going on there and I did not tell it to my friend) and told her it was God telling her to go back to the Church and told her some prayers to help fix it until she can get a Priest (my friend is not Catholic), namely The Lord's Prayer. She would never accept money for helping people and believes her ability is from God and given to her to help people....she does not advertise her ability, and in fact tells very few people about it, she is very prayerful and will never use anything such as ouija boards or seances....my question is then, can we now be certain her gift is from God and accept everything she sees and feels?

I might add in she said as a child she asked God to take away whatever ability she had and after talking to her pastor (not Catholic) he told her to accept her gift from God and use it for His Greater Glory, at which time she prayed for help to use her gift wisely, which in my opinion she does.

Thanks for your time in reading this =)

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)

Dear Melissa:

There does exist a few rare people who have preternatural abilities as you describe of your friend.  Fr. Amorth, the exorcist in Rome, mentions this possibility in his book. This is not being a psychic, however.

The characteristics of anyone with such genuine abilities is that they are very prayerful and devout Christians, anything they sense will not contradict even a dotted "i" of biblical or Church teaching, the exercise of thier gift will not wear them out, and the information is never for personal use (financial or otherwise) or frivolous use. Such gifts are meant to benefit the Faithful.

Because these gifts can so easily be counterfeited by the devil, any person with such gifts should never, and I mean never, trust themselves to properly discern the gifts or its effects. Such a person needs to be under the continuing guidance of a wise and experienced spiritual director who is familiar with such things.

If she does this, then I can join her pastor in saying that she should "accept the gift from God and use it for His Greater Glory."

We will pray that she can find a good spiritual director and that she will use the gifts to the greater glory of God and His children.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
