Question:

Dear Brother,

Thank you for your ministry. The Seven Steps to Self-Deliverance and other prayers are a blessing in my life. Thank you for answering my question on Oct. 2 about surgery and for your suggestion about saying the Litany of Who I Am in Christ which is a great help.

Your answers to the recent questions about infertility are also very helpful, as my husband and I have been trying to conceive for 2 years now. NaProTechnology is a Church-approved method of treating infertility which has a very high record of success, even better than IVF clinics, and there are no embryos created outside the womb. We are receiving care from a physician trained at the Pope Paul VI Institute and feel very blessed.

Recently, I joined the choir at my new parish, and I shared with the music director at a church picnic that we are hoping to start our family. He then shared that he and his wife did IVF before adopting their daughter, and he did not express any remorse, in fact, he said that the IVF doctor was a Mass-attending "Catholic" who has pictures of babies all over the waiting room in his office, as if to say that he is "pro-life." I was polite and non-judgmental, but over the course of time, I made it known to him that I follow Church teaching in all matters of my life. This caused some tension and hostility between us. Also, it is clear that he and the pastor are close friends who do a great deal of gossiping and they talk poorly of what they call "traditionalists" like myself. Christmas Eve Mass was a horrible nightmare where the director treated me with contempt. I have forgiven him, but I have also concluded that I must not return to choir, and must try to avoid this person and his toxic beliefs. I am at peace now that I do not have this man's influence in my life.

Also, my great-aunt was infertile and, very tragically, she and her husband adopted a boy and some time later, she took her own life. I am currently having Gregorian Masses (30 in a row) said for my great-aunt, as my family is not Catholic, so I am sure that this was never done for her.

And, I appreciate your advice to offer the infertility up for the benefit of others. I am doing this.

Do you think there is a "spirit" of infertility that ought to be prayed against? My family is very pro-abortion, and this attitude goes back several generations, as they are Episcopalian, and, as you know, this was the first Christian denomination to approve contraception. The attitude toward children in my family is that they are burdens and that is better to abort children with Downs Syndrome, etc. I just wonder if the infertility is partly a result of ancestral sin in addition to the biological aspects of it.

Thank you, Brother, for all that you do to help others in your ministry.

Peace,

Claudia Lyn

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)

Dear Claudia Lyn:

I praise God for your obedience and loyalty to God and His Church. God will reward you and give you a great grace in return.

Thanks for the reference to the Church-approved fertility program.

As for the Choir fella, you did your duty. It is not our place to convince anyone of the truth. Our job is to give the message and then let God do the convincing. You have done your part to inform his man of the Church teaching on IVF. It is probably a good thing to retire from the choir at this time.

If your pastor and others at your parish are hostle to the truth of Church teaching and are so arrogant tht they make up their own private magisterium to decide what is right or wrong, then accept that as mortification. St. Francis deSales tells us that an ounce of mortification is worth more than a 1000 pounds of honor.

But, if you hear the pastor or any teacher at your parish teaching things contrary to the Church, they need to be confronted. If the Pastor does not stop the errors then you can contact the bishop.

Canon Law gives us the right to expect the faith to be taught accurately. When that is not done, Canon Law gives us the right to redress our grievances to the pastor, to the bishop, and even to the Pope, if necessary.

Yes, there can certainly be a "spirit of infertility", a "spirit of abortion", a "spirit of contraception", etc.

We have a prayer in our Catalog called, Rebuking Particular Spirits. The Church does not allow us to ask a demon its name, but we can call the demons by their attributes, such as the spirit of lust, greed, anger, disobedience, infertility, abortion, contraception, etc.

If this has been an issue in your family you will especially what to pray the Prayer Of Renunciation Of Ancestral Sins. All of us should pray that prayer since we have no idea what our grandparent, great-grandparents may have done to bring the family to the attention of the devil.

I praise God that our site has been helpful to you and please know that we continue and will always be praying for you and for all who contact us for as long we we exist or until the Second Coming, which is first.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
