Question:

Dear Brother Ignatius Mary,

what do you think about "The Peace Sign", is it occult or not?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)

Dear Christopher:

The problems with symbols is that people or groups can appropriate them for their own use and give them meaning for themselves that has no relation to the original meaning.

A good example of that is the upside-down cross. It is said that this symbol is one used by Satanists. Actually real Satanist point out that this symbol is not one of theirs, that it is the symbol of St. Peter who was crucified upside-down. It is interesting that Satanists know the true meaning of the upside-down cross and not Christians.

Much of the rash judgment about symbols comes from the fundamentalist Protestant crowd. This is where I first heard, in the Baptist Church, that the Peace Sign was suppose to be an upside-down broken cross, and therefore it was evil. This is not the case.

This symbol was invented in 1958 by Gerald Holtom for the British nuclear disarmament movement. The design is a combination of the semaphore signals for the letters "N" and "D," standing for "nuclear disarmament". In semaphore, the letter "N" is formed by a person holding two flags in an inverted "V," and the letter "D" is formed by holding one flagpeace symbol semaphore pointed straight up and the other pointed straight down. See graphics to the left.

The peace symbol is created by superimposing these two semaphore signs.

There is nothing occultic about it. It was originally the symbol for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and late adopted by the peace movement in the 60s a a general sign of peace.

Some alleged that this is the Cross of Nero, the notorious Roman emperor who persecuted Christians. Centuries later, it was recognized as an old Norse Rune. [Notice its image in the red circle.]  Vikings called it "Toten Rune (Death Rune)," while some Germanic people labeled it Todesrune (Rune of Death).[7] After WW2 (1939-1945), it was found on the tombstones of certain Hitler's SS troops and labeled "The Dead Man Rune."

The image to the left is a closer look of this Rune. It is similar to what we see in the peace symbol, but a thinking person should know that similarity does not necessarily mean sameness.

The peace symbol did not exist until 1958. The Rune has nothing to do with it despite the similarity to the figure inside the circle of the peace symbol.
