Temptations to destroy holy things Teresa Wednesday, January 23, 2013

Question:

Hi Brother

I am concerned with a recent couple of times of which my husband and I do scripture readings daily and durring couple of the times I felt tempted to throw or tear my bible. I was not upset, but I have been through the ringer with other temptations such as destruction and including self destruction and self harm. Is this all part of it as I am being honest in explaining what is going on.

I say the act of contrition both times I had such a temptation but now I wish to bring it into confession and ask for the grace to stop all these temptations. I love my bible and have respect for the sacramentals so why would this even come up. I am not mad at God or at the bible. It just does not make any sense.

What are your thoughts on this. Thank you always for your clarity in matters and sound insight. I ask for prayers as returning back to the catholic church has not been an easy process for my soul.

I have been using the steps of dileverance and all the prayers weekly confession and mass every week and I am going to try to begin weekly adoration of the Holy Eucharist. I feel I am being constantly harassed. I am happy I have a good solid catholic therapist. He may be a dileverance therapist. I am however really concerned about descent events of trying to eat and feeling pain and vomiting not sleeping at night and now this sometimes I think God gives us to much to handle.

I ask for alot of prayers. I feel I need to bring this temptation up in confession. My confessor will wonder what in the world is going on. I can only say the devil is bugging me again. Should I use a deliverance prayer before scripture reading. I also wear st Benedict crucifix around my neck but I know it is not magic. Does this happen to other people? Thanks for your insight prayers and clarity in such matters.

Question Answered by

Dear Teresa:

The response to harassment is always prayer and living the good Christian life. Pray for protection from St. Michael and your Guardian Angel as the first prayer of your prayer time, before reading or studying the Bible, at the beginning of your day, a Morning Offering, and at bedtime, and throughout the day.  The magazine Magnificat is a superb and excellent resource for prayers and devotions throughout the day.

As for temptations, there is no sin in temptation. The sin is indulging the temptation. But, yes, bring up the temptations in the Confessional. The Sacrament of Confession is a sacrament not only of confession, penance, and reconciliation, but it is also a sacrament of healing and strengthening. Thus, discussing your temptations with your Confessor can help to make you stronger in resisting them.

I understand that you feel overwhelmed at times, but God NEVER gives you more than you can handle. That would be cruel. God promises that no temptation will be allowed in your life that you cannot handle:

(1 Cor 10:13) No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

That is God's promise and God does not lie. God always keeps His promises. God may not remove the temptations, but He will always give you the grace to endure the temptations and to provide a way to escape from falling to the temptations. Trust Him. He never lies. He always keeps His promises.

We are praying for you.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
