Question Title Posted By Question Date
Number 37 Jane Saturday, November 13, 2004

Question:

I really don't want this to sound trivial or nutty, but ever since the age of 14 I have noticed that the number 37 appears regularly in my life. Sometimes days will go past with nothing, then I can have it appear as often as seven times in a day.

This happens in everyday ways, such as the order number given to me at a restaurant. Nearly always the number comes to me from an outside source, without my having any control over it. It used to worry me a great deal, as I felt it might mean something bad was going to happen. Then I decided I couldn't let it worry me and I tried to accept it.

I know it's a trivial matter compared to some of the subjects you cover, but although I have learned to accept it, I am still very curious as to what meaning the number 37 could have.

Dear Jane:

Sorry about the delay in answering.

The experience you describe is not an unusual one. To put it in a humorous way, "You have 37 on the brain!" :)

There has actually been some scientific research on this phenomenon. For whatever reasons the number 37 came to your attention. Then by sheer coincidence you saw the number again and again.

This apparent pattern now has a grip on you so that you begin to see 37 everywhere.

If we were to examine this objectively we would find that the number 37 had been all around you even before you were 14; it is all around me, too. These numbers are common, it is just that we do not notice them until something happens that catches our attention a couple of times and we begin to presume a pattern.

To answer your question, there is no meaning to the number 37. You are merely experiencing a form of "selective perception" where you have focused on the number 37 and now notice it more readily than usual whenever just happens to pop up.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
