Possession and Pornography Michael Friday, July 12, 2013

Question:

Brother,

For many years I was a sex addict.

I had it under control for a while and then recently relapsed.

I have also dealt with scrupulosity.

But, lately, the impulsive thoughts (especially of sex and suicide) seem to be overpowering me and my mind feels split. I haven't been speaking any foreign languages or levitating or anything dramatic like that but I feel very oppressed and feel as if a weight is upon me. I am going to make an appointment with my parish priest but was just wondering what the procedure is for determining possession?

Thanks.

Dear Michael:

Possession is rare. Lower forms of demonization, however, are pandemic. There is always a demon hanging around sexual sins and especially around suicidal thoughts.

You need to rebuke these thoughts, that is, the spirits behind these thoughts. There are rebuking prayers in our Spiritual Warfare Catalog, linked below. Also use the Hedge Prayer of Protection and the Prayer to Control Thoughts.

Rebuke these spirits of these thoughts each and every time. If the thoughts come 100 times a day, then rebuke them 100 times a day. This can be done with a quick prayer, "I rebuke you spirit of ____________ (pornography, lust, suicide, etc), and cast you out from me in the name of Jesus Christ. Father, remove these evil spirits from me and give me a spirit of _____________ (chastity of mind, purity, joy, life -- whatever the opposite spirit is)."

Practice good thinking hygiene. When these thoughts come to mind distract yourself by doing something else to occupy your mind. That can be repeating Hail Marys, maybe mowing the lawn, doing the dishes, anything. Temptations usually come in short bursts, so by the time you finish the dishes, for example, the temptation will normally have dissipated. This is called "passing open windows" in our support group for sexual addicts, Catholic Support Group for Sexual Addiction Recovery.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
