Question:

Dear Brother Ignatius,

I recently saw a compilation of catholic prayers and deliverance prayers at the site of Jayson Brunelle (Apostles of Light of Immaculate Heart of Mary). What do you think of the prayers and the site in the light of Catholic teachings? Thanks in advance!

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), CCL, LTh, DD, LNDC

Dear Amelia:

If you look closely you will see that the deliverance prayers are not on the site of Jayson Brunelle. He links to another site called The Catholic Warrior owned by Robert Abel.

As to the prayers listed by Robert Abel, there is nothing wrong with them. They are consistent with the types of prayer that are appropriate. We have similar prayers in our Spiritual Warfare Prayer Catalog, linked below.

Laity can use seven types of prayers in deliverance for themselves or in praying for others:

  • Prayers of Healing (with limitations outlined in Instruction on Prayers for Healing)
  • Prayers to reject evil (i.e., our Baptismal Promises)
  • Prayers of Repentance
  • Prayers of Forgiveness
  • Prayers of Renunciation
  • Deprecatory Prayers (i.e., petitioning our Lord or asking for the intercession of the angels and saints to help the afflicted person)
  • Imperative Prayers (i.e., commanding such as commands of loosing and binding, rebuking, and deliverance with limitations outlined in Inde Ab Aliquot Annis: On The Current Norms Governing Exorcisms)

Imprecatory Prayers are not allowed to laity. To imprecate means to invoke evil upon, or curse. Imprecatory Prayers, therefore, contain curses or prayers for punishment upon the demon.  Imprecatory prayers are found in the Bible: Psalms 7, 35, 55, 58, 59, 69, 79, 109, 137 and 139, which all contain prayers for God's judgment on the psalmist's enemies.

Imprecatory prayers are restricted and only allowed in a solemn exorcism performed by a priest with permission of his bishop.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
