Mental illness OR demonic? Mary Sunday, December 1, 2013

Question:

Please pray for my son who was allowed to get off his meds for schizophrenia a couple of months ago (with dr. approval since he had improved a lot).

Before his mental illness diagnosis, I was sure his oddities and bizarre behavior was due to his involvement in the New Age (which I didn't even know what that meant until he started talking about energy, etc so I did tons of research into it). He had told me that he was trying to get into the highest dimensions and that he was seeing and hearing things and that people were coming to him for healing, etc. etc. Others around me thought that he had schizophrenia instead and I wasn't so sure since the symptoms were so similar with both.

Then when he was on the meds, he was doing so well until he pressured the dr. to let him off (once a month injection that he had been on for less than 6 months). While on the meds (up until a couple of months ago) he was living with me and loved my company. He is now very heavily into New Age again and particularly astral projection. I have only been able to visit him a couple of times to take him food, but he has been very upset with me since because of the law, he found out that I was the one that had to sign the papers for him to be hospitalized (believe me it was the hardest thing I've ever had to do in my life)!  He keeps throwing that back at me and has told me that he has been haunted that he will be sent back to the hospital! He's been very upset about it and has said that he's going to leave again like he did before.

My concern is if it truly is schizophrenia, we need to get him back on meds, BUT I'm very concerned again that this could be that he has opened himself up to dark forces. and that he's dealing with the demonic. He used to be very holy, but now he hates anything to do with Catholicism. We never have been able to figure out how he went from one extreme to another.

I've read how the field of psychology falls short in that it doesn't take into consideration the spiritual--that's exactly why I'm questioning it. I'm beginning to think that even though the meds helped him tremendously, I'm thinking the drugging had just kind of stopped that New Age thinking and now that he's off and able to think more clearly, he's in full force New Age again! I also realize that if he's relapsing, he needs help fast BUT I don't want to ignore what he's doing now--it's like he's brainwashed--nothing I say gets through to him and he gets very upset and has told me NOT to come back. Please pray that we get the answers we need to help him asap. Thank you.

Dear Mary:

From your description it would appear that he needs to be on the meds. You might talk with his doctor about this, but if your son is an adult, because of confidentiality, all you can do is express your concern and describe your son's behavior since getting off the meds.

If you son is an adult, there is little you can do in terms of forcing him to get back on meds. Usually, the only way you can have him committed to a psych hospital, even for just a 72 hour evaluation, is if he is a danger to himself or to others. You might want to check with a psychiatrist or a lawyer on what is possible in terms of involuntary commitment to a hospital.

Otherwise, you can encourage him, not nag him, to see his doctor and to take his meds.

Because of what appears to be his deep involvement in the New Age it is certainly possible that demons could be lurking around him. Demons often do not cause problems but will hitchhike on problems that already exist. Your son is vulnerable, thus, that fact and his New Age involvement, it would be wise for you to pray spiritual warfare prayers on his behalf.

Our Spiritual Warfare Prayer Catalog is linked below. Under the Proxy section you will find several prayers that you can pray on his behalf. Under the Praying for Others section is this prayer, which I also recommend: Hedge Prayer for Protection of Others. Also, in the Protecting our Household section is a prayer for our children: Prayer for our Children

I know how hard all this is as a parent to see our children suffer and to make wrong decisions. But, if they are adults we have limited influence upon them if they do not wish it. We, as parents, however, have some spiritual authority with our children, who are part of our household, even if they are adults and have moved away. Thus, the prayers of a mother and father can have greater effect than the prayers of others, though others need to pray, too.

We will certainly be in prayer for your son and for you.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
