Question:

Hello,
My daughter has written to you several times and received answers back that make good sense. So I am writing to see what you may think

There is a school of thought that says our lives are determined by the decisions we make. I do notice however that it seems some people make reasonable, thoughtful decisions, but have remarkably difficult lives. Then there are others who make the same quality decisions ,but have far easier lives. Could it be that the people going through these difficult times in some cases for many years are under some sort of spiritual oppression.if this is the case what are the signs (really clear ones if that is possible) and how can it be reversed or nullified?

Looking forward to your reply
Many thanks
Sarah

Dear Sarah:

There is no way to answer your question. Hypotheticals generally have little value because they do not include details. The only way to answer a question is to know the details.

In this case, were talking about what someone else does, what decisions the other person makes. There is no possible way for us to know what decisions another person makes for his life. It may appear that our neighbor is making good and sound decisions, but that may not be so. We have no idea what decisions are being made in that household because were not in that household. We also do not know the mind and heart of our neighbor. And, it is always possible that our neighbor may be living the secret life, even from their spouse. The bottom line is that it is impossible to know what decisions are being made by our neighbor. As the old cliché goes, "appearances can be deceiving" and we can never fully know a person's heart.

There are four things that can determine the course and quality of our life:

1) The primary factor is the decisions we make. This is not just a school of thought, this is objective of reality. We must suffer the consequences of bad decisions, even if we were not aware that the decision was bad. Conversely, of course, we benefit from good decisions.

2) A second factor that may effect our lives are events that are beyond our control. For example, if a tornado destroys our house, or a drunk driver crashes into our car causing us to be paraplegic, these events dramatically change the course and quality of our life, that is, cause us difficulties. A person can make absolutely top-quality decisions for life and yet have many difficult times because of events that are beyond their control. Again, we cannot know what these events may be in another's life.

3) A third factor is the trials and tribulations can come into our life because God allows it to happen for some reason. It may be to test our faith, or to teach us some lesson we need to learn, or any host of reasons that only God knows. We know this is possible because this is what happened to Job. Job was a righteous man. He did nothing to deserve the demonic attacks he and his family received. God allowed it to happen. In addition, we know from the story that Satan had to ask permission of God to attack Job.

4) A fourth factor is our faith. Our faith does not necessarily change the difficulties of our life, but it can change the way we relate to those difficulties. Faith can help us cope with tragedies, for example. Faith can help us to transcend disabilities and thereby allow us to live full and productive lives in spite of the disabilities. We cannot know the degree of another person's faith.

Concerning demonological issues, a person can be a complete innocent, he can do absolutely nothing wrong, he may be a perfect Christian, and still have demons cause many difficulties in his life. Oftentimes evil is completely arbitrary and does not need a reason to make our lives difficult. It is possible for someone to even be possessed and yet be a perfectly innocent person.

The bottom line is that there are thousands of possible variables to explain why some people have difficult lives and some do not. It is simply impossible to be able to answer your question without knowing the individual and personal details of the people involved. And even then, we may not be able to find "why," because as I mentioned, evil can be arbitrary or there may be variables that no one can know, not even the person himself.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
