Is my friend wrong? MaryAnn Friday, April 22, 2016

Question:

He tells me I shouldn't do cartoons or write stories making fun of the devil. He thinks if I make the devil appear in less than flattering terms, there may be repercussions. I had written a few stories featuring the devil giving a big satchel of money to someone, but it was counterfeit. Jokes about hell, asking people if they want to go to a barbecue, and other things pop up in my "artwork".

All my stuff isn't about the devil, but I give him dishonorable mention from time to time.

Dear MaryAnn:

I teach my students in deliverance counseling to not make fun of the demons during the deliverance. We must give them respect as they are creatures more powerful than us. Of course, this respect is like the respect we give a rattlesnake.

As for cartoons and stories, one can use humor to get across the serious facts of who demons are and why they attack us. So, I think we should not make fun of the devil just to be making fun of the devil, but using such humor to make a serious point.

Depending on the message you are giving it is possible to have repercussions from the demons.

Telling jokes about the hell can backfire. It can trivialize the subject of hell. Again the jokes need to make a serious point. If the person you are telling the joke understands your belief about hell, and thus knows that the joke is really a warning, then it can work. Without this essential understanding the joke may have no effect.

Comedians often make jokes about hell and the devil. In doing so they trivialize the subject and use the humor to actually promote the idea and hell and the devil does not exist. We need to avoid that perception from others. If the person knows you are serious about hell and that your joke is really warning, then you have helped them.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
