Question Title Posted By Question Date
Anointing at end of Divine Liturgy Jerry Thursday, October 13, 2016

Question:

I am a Roman Catholic, and attend a Byzantine Catholic parish.

At the end of the Divine Liturgy on Feasts such as Sundays there is a final blessing called the Mirovanije, the priest will anoint the faithful with a fragrant oil using a brush, and say "Christ is Among us," we respond "He is and shall be."

There is a family that attends on occasion, and they have a teenage son. I know the family and the boy well enough to know he is in a state of mortal sin but received receives Holy Communion anyway.

But at the end of the Liturgy, when the priest comes out to the people to anoint the faithful with blessed oil, the boy will practically run out of the church to get away. I asked him why he doesn't go to go to receive the blessing with the oil, he told me he doesn't know why but when they do that he feels this urge to be far away from it and doesn't know why.

Do you think that is a sign that is he under demonic influence? Why can he seem to receive Holy Communion unworthily without any problems but the blessed oil? I also want to mention that his mother is a new ager who practices divination and reiki, and performs reiki on the boy.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), CCL, LTh, DD, LNDC

Dear Jerry:

If the boy has unconfessed grave sins the he, of course, should not be receiving the Eucharist. The boy should be informed of this and the spiritual danger he is in by doing so. He needs to be instructed to go the Sacrament of Confession regularly and, if he sins again, before receiving the Eucharist.

As for the boy running from the blessing saying "he feels this urge to be far away from it and doesn't know why" may be a clue to demonization. Given his mother's activities, and especially since she does Reiki on the boy, the likelihood that he is demonized is very high.

As for why he can receive the Eucharist, but not the blessing? Well, demons will see his sacrilege of receiving the Eucharist as a form of desecration in the same way as if an occultist stole the Eucharist and desecrated it at home in a ritual.

The blessing, on the other hand, is seen as an attack by the demons. This is why he would run from it.

I would suggest that the following prayers be said for the boy from our Spiritual Warfare Prayer Catalog, linked below:

Proxy Deliverance Prayer for a Friend or Relative
Hedge Prayer for Protection of Others

I would suggest the Proxy Deliverance prayer be said for the mother.  As well as the following if she is Catholic:

Hedge Prayer for Return of Wayward Catholics

Check the Catalog for any other prayers that may be useful.

We will be sure to pray for this boy and for his mother, and for you.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
