Question: After much "seeking" in New Age, "witchcraft," Buddhism and Hinduism and Native Shamanism, etc. I was initiated into a cult, the OTO, about 15 years ago. I was raised Catholic, but left my faith completely in college and lived a hedonistic narcissistic life for many years. About 5 years ago I experienced a conversion, a finding of the Truth, and came back to the Church. I would like to know if I need special treatment, like Deliverance Prayers by a trained priest. I regularly do that type of prayer on my own. I, obviously and rightly, have much guilt and regret over my past lifestyle and it often distresses me. I have a son who is very devout in his faith, but I sometimes fear that I have tainted him somehow, and I would like to know if there is anything that I can do to resolve that. I have been to confession and will be in full communion with the Church by Easter as I am waiting on my husband's annulment to go through, which it should next week (he is not a believer, but is doing this for me, so that I can return fully to the Church). Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), LTh, DD Dear Anne: Welcome back to the Church. The primary thing you need to do you have already done — Confession. In addition, to that you need to take back the ground that Satan occupied because of your sin. I recommend everyone pray this pray after Confession: Prayer After Confession To Re-Claim Ground Taken By Satan. I would also recommend Breaking Personal Curses and Spells. Other prayers include Hedge Prayer for Protection of Household, Prayer To Put On The Armor Of God, and Prayer for Filling of The Holy Spirit. In your case, I recommend especially the Doctrinal Affirmation Prayer and the Prayer Signatures. There are other prayers in our Spiritual Warfare Prayer Catalog, linked below, that may be useful. Given your background I would suggest going through our Seven Steps to Self-Deliverance, also linked below. If you feel the need you can ask for formal deliverance counseling by filling out our Help Request Form. This is where we will counsel and pray with you for deliverance over a Seven Step process that takes around nine weeks to complete. As for your guilt, remember that the purpose of guilt is to bring us to repentance. Once we have repented and confessed, guilt is no longer needed. Scripture informs us that "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). God is not a liar. He keeps His promises, and this is one of His promises. You are cleansed. We can have some remorse for our past, but we need to focus on the fact that God has cleansed us and look forward not backward. Focusing on the past can lead to a demonic bondage. You do not want that. Look forward in you renewed life in the Church. We can help you with this. As for you son, do not fret over possibilities. This is another area that can lead to bondage. Pray for your son, and deal with issues if and when they happen. The Hedge Prayer of Protection, linked above, encircles your entire household, which includes even grown children with children of their own. As for a priest, you can ask any priest to prayer over you. That is valuable to do. But, unfortunately few priest are knowledgeable about deliverance.
