Question: We have a son that is 16. He is living in mortal sin in impurity. He has done alot of things.It dosent seem to bother him. We feel he has unclean spirits that he neds delivered from. We are all converts and come from abusive backgrounds and we have prayed and closed many doors. Do we still have spiritual authority over him even though he is past the age of reason?

Parents have direct spiritual authority over their children regardless of age. A minor child is under your direct authority spiritually and in the familial and paterfamilias relationship. Even when the child becomes an adult, and even when he marries and has his own children, he is still in your household to which you still maintain a spiritual authority. These are patron Saints against sexual temptations and patron Saints for Chasity. St. Monica prayer for her son, who was a reprobate and sexual sinner, for years. Finally, shortly before her death, he son repented and came back to the Church. Her son, of course, was Saint Augustine, one of the greatest Saints of all time. So there is always hope. Keep praying for him, teach him the faith gently and the reasons why sexual sins are destructive. Never give up no matter how old he gets.
