Question:

Dear Brother Ignatius Mary
Someone dear to me has been suffering from the anxiety,depression and social phobia for about 12 months.Specialist medical treatment has been sought and several medications tried to no real effect.As soon as the person gets better there is a new "thing" or place to be fearful of.I have had my home blessed,Holy Masses offered ,made several 54 day Rosary novenas ,prayed to St Padre Pio, St Joseph,St Michael, St Gabriel, St Raphael,St Maximilian Kolbe and many others.This person is unable to study or do anything outside of home.This person used to pray the rosary with me and come to Eucharistic Adoration.This person still comes to Holy Mass to keep me happy as I have made it absolutely non negotiable not to, even at this persons worst I did would beg God or the Blessed mother to help me get this person to Holy Mass.This has been my only consolation through out this whole ordeal.Strange things have happened in my home and one day I found an item of clothing on fire.No matter what happens I still continue to pray unceasingly. . This person refuses to pray and feels abandoned by God.I don't know how this has happened.

Dear Anon:

I am sorry to hear about your friend. We will certainly be in prayer for this person.

You do not say how old the person is, but it is possible that a psychiatric condition can suddenly present itself, even later in life, with no real hint or clues of its coming.

Seeking psychiatric help is the first step, which looks like you have done. Sometimes it can take awhile before the doctors can find the right medications that will work. If one drug does not work at any dosage, then perhaps another drug will, or combination of drugs.

Given all that, it is also possible that your friend's problem is spiritual. Most of the time, there is some trigger to a spiritual problem -- a person using a Ouija board, a curse place upon them by some angry friend or stranger, etc. It would be unusual for a spiritual problem to just pop up without some provocation or trigger of some kind. But, I do not have all the information, so this is all speculation.

Normally, I have clients fill out 26 page questionnaire that asks questions on every aspect of a person's life followed by a 1-2 hour interview. It is only through such a thorough examination that it is possible to make an educated guess on what is happening.

I would certainly encourage the person to keep following the doctor's directions.

If the person will not pray, then there are prayers and spiritual warfare methods that you can do on their behalf. The spiritual warfare catalog, linked below, had some prayers that can be handy in your case.

I would recommend praying, on her behalf if she will not do it herself the Prayer Of Renunciation Of Ancestral Sins.

Remember one thing, there is nothing we can do to get someone to do something they do not want to do. In such cases we must refer the matter to God in prayer and keep praying for them with persistence in hopes that they will change their mind.
