Getting pinned down Britt Saturday, August 18, 2007

Question:

For most of my life I was a lukewarm Catholic and for a while even doubted there was an afterlife. Over the last couple of years I have had a deep conversion and have become a devout Catholic. While in deep prayer or having some serious contemplation about God I have been pinned down to my bed, this happened about a half dozen times over the past year. One time it lasted for about 15 or 20 seconds and I couldn't even breathe, the only thing I could do was pray and after a short time it would go away. One night it happened several times. I am kind of wondering what this means. Any information would help. Thank you and God bless.

Dear Britt:

If these occurrences are happening in the twilight moments between sleep and awakening then it could be a natural phenomenon known as Cataleptic somnambulism. This event is a state of paralysis that lasts usually only for a few seconds or minutes. It is natural and most people experience it sometime in their lives.

This may also happen when you are in deep contemplation since contemplation may bring you to a quasi-sleep state.

Another possibility, or in addition to the natural explanation above since demons like to hitchhike on situations that already exist, is that a demonic element may be present. This time of quasi-awakeness is a spiritually vulnerable time that demons can exploit.

If you are talking about being pinned down on your bed when you are in completely awake, and not in contemplation (not just awakening from sleep, but just happen to be praying while on your bed) then a demonic source is more certain.

If these events occur in that state when you are asleep and beginning to awake, or perhaps when in a deep contemplation, and there seems to be a demonic element, then at the moment, pray in your mind, "In the name of Jesus, be gone." Repeat that three times. You can also pray as applicable, the "Bedtime Prayer of Protection" found in our SW Prayer Catalog before going to bed, or a prayer asking God to protect you before beginning a session of deep contemplation.

If this is happening when you are fully awake, in the middle of the day sort of thing, then there is much more going on. If this continues you may want to contact us.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
