Is the mafia satanic? Juliet Saturday, December 29, 2007

Question:

I am italian american and have been exposed to stereotypes about the mafia. We all have seen the Godfather movies. But the mafia is contrary to almost everything catholic.

I did go to a funeral of a one time head of the NY five families and was shocked to hear from one of the eight priests saying his funeral mass that he was certainly drinking wine with God in heaven right then. I had read about the violence of the mafia and was shocked that the priest didn't even mention purgatory.

At any rate, I have heard that the have to pledge that they put the mafia before God and they have to burn the picture of the saint of their birthday with blood in their hand.

I read about different mafia members, like the Teflon Don, and if the cosa nostra, or mafia is, in essence, or overtly satanic I want to quit glamorizing it and forget about it, as opposed to fogeddaboudit.

this is somewhat important to me as Hollywood always makes made men or wise guys look so cool. they are pretty grizzly though , aren't they really?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Juliet:

I am rather shocked at your post. You seem to be saying that you currently glamorize the Mafia and that you will stop only if they are overtly Satanic.

My dear, the Mafia are criminals and murderers. Under NO circumstances should you be glamorizing the Mafia or admiring them in any way regardless of whether or not they are "overtly Satanic." Shame on you.

You need to immediately divest yourself and repent of any admiration or esteem or any other disordered interest you have in the Mafia, or any other criminal group.

I would suggest seeing a counselor to find out why you are enamored by these evil people. This is truly a disorder and an unChristian thing for you to do.

I would also advise going to confession to confess your inordinate interest in evil people.

We will be praying for you.

God bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
