Question:

Dear Brother,

Often I have trouble waking up on time for work, so I ask my guardian angel to help me wake up on time and not be late. I've never prayed this prayer and been late to work.

My question is: When I'm going to sleep I ask my guardian angel three times to help me wake up ontime and not be late. Is this a superstitious thing(praying three times?)

Thank you very much and God bless you

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Layla:

God has given us a guardian angel to help us. One can certainly ask our angel for help, even to wake us on time. As for asking this three times, why do you feel you need to do that?

If you do not know why, or there is not a legitimate reason why, then this is probably superstition.

Oftentimes Catholic prayers are said three times, not because saying it three times will more likely get the prayer answered (that is superstition), but in honor of the Trinity.

If you think that your Guardian Angel will not answer your prayer unless you ask three times, then that is superstition -- Your Guardian Angel is not hard of hearing, so he hears you the first time :).

Now if you want you can ask your Guardian Angel first in the Name of the Father, then second, in the Name of the Son, and third, in the Name of the Holy Spirit. But this must be done because you wish to honor the Persons of the Trinity, not because you think your prayer will not be heard unless you say it three times.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
