Praying in tongues in public at Catholic Charismatics Renewal Prayer sessions Beth Wednesday, April 23, 2008

Question:

May God Bless you and your work.

I am a newbie here and I would like to ask you a question. I have searched you FAQ forum but could not find the answer yet. If I miss it, please direct me to the correct link that has the answer

I attended several Catholic Charismatic Renewal prayer sessions. They started out with 1) praying Divine Mercy Chaplet (20 mins) then 2) sing several hymns to praise and glorify GOD (20 mins) and 3) prayer in tongues (estatic utterances for 20 minutes). Not all the people attending the Charismatic prayer sessions have the 'gift' of tongues so it was kind of confusing for us who do not have this 'gift'. However I enjoy tremendously part 1 and part 2.

I have read and understood 1 Corinth Chapters 12-14 and I have read the Cachesim of the Catholic Church.. and I cannot find any documents which support praying in tongue in public w/o the gift of interpretation. Would you please let me know what the Vatican thinks about praying in tongue in public w/o the gift of interpretation.

Thanks you for your time and May God Bless you
Beth

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Beth:

There is no specific statement from the Vatican about speaking in tongues to which I am aware.

And, there is no support in any writings of the Saints, or in the Bible, for the practice praying in tongues en masse. In addition, St. Paul is clear that he thought is was better to speak in a language one knows and understands than in one that cannot be understood.

This practice you describe does not have a Catholic origin, but one in Pentecostalism. It is a shame that something that is an potentially as wonderful as the Charismatic Renewal must be contaminated with Pentecostalisms.

You may be interested in an extensive article that discusses the pros and cons of the Charismatic Renewal and the expression of Charism Gifts. This article goes into detail about the Pentecostalisms that contaminate the Renewal.

This document is an excerpt from the Rule of the Order of the Legion of St. Michael and is entitled, "Charism Gifts Building up the Church."

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
