Question: I was watching the TV show called The Haunting the other night. They re-enacted a story where a man used a witchcraft book to conjure up 4 spririts / demons. Now the TV show was very specific when they showed him using this formula. They showed the page the spell/chant was on for a brief moment. You could read some of the spell/chant and see the names of the 4 spirits on the page and a strange looking symbol beside each one. Also, when the actor was saying the spell/chant, the names of the spirits were said aloud and the strange symbol used in the book was flashed on the TV screen after each name was called out. Could this show be trying to get viewers to say the names of these spirits to try and get somebody cursed or interested in witchcraft? The show did however portray what happened to the man involved after he used the spell as scary and violent and not like something anybody would want to do. It just seemed like way too much info for me and I even felt a little uneasy about the details it showed. My questions are, can saying the names of spirits or reading the names of spirits off of a page be harmful? What do you make of those strange symbols I described? Is it OK to watch shows like this for entertainment or is this imprudent? Thanks in advance.
Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM Dear Trevor: We cannot know the motivation of the TV producers. I doubt, however, that their intent was to get people cursed. Showing the details, however, and text of the spells was irresponsible. There was no reason to do that in order to tell the story. To give the actual wording of spells can "educate" wannabe witches and occultist some of whom are children. If this show is that irresponsible it should be banned. As to the question of actors saying these words is it possible for them to come under spiritual attack? Yes, it is possible. The demons do not care of the person was sincere or not, or even believes in the spell or not. The spells are incantations and rituals designed to gain the attention of demons. It can do that no matter who recites the words or performs the ritual. I would not recommend watching this or any of the other "haunting" shows.
