Question:

There is a series of books out for teens that has as its main character young men that are vampires. They do not drink the blood of people but of animals.

One of my teens wants to read these books but I told her that is isn't on our "approved" list of books for her to read. I feel that reading something like this isn't going to lift her up or strengthen her faith but expose her to dark things.

I would like more info on vampires. Are there really people who are like this? Is this connected with the occult or is it a mental illness craving? Of course the way it is presented in the books is as if this was a normal thing. Some people are like this and some are not.

Could you give me some info on this. I don't know if I could trust what I read on the internet if I googled it. Thanks

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Lynda:

There is no such thing as vampires, except vampire bats. There is a psychiatric condition in which a person "thinks" he is a vampire and will even drink blood. This condition is usually known as Renfield syndrome.

These people, usually men, obsession with drinking blood is usually associated with the delusion that doing so will give them special powers.

A book series based on vampires is not to be recommended to our children. The subject is part of the Culture of Death that our beloved Pope John Paul II, may he rest in peace, warned us about.

As for real vampires like depicted in novels and movies -- they do not exist.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
