Can't control my temper Maria Monday, June 9, 2008

Question:

Dearest Brother,

I have 3 toddlers and am pregnant. I have a horrible temper that frightens me. How do I conquer this please? I say horrible things while yelling to my children, sometimes throwing things and spanking children too hard when they are disobediant or causing the other sibling to cry. I feel like just giving up since I can't control them or myself. Help.

Maria

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Maria:

What you are describing is very serious. You need to get some help on this right away. Your might try calling your local hospital or crisis line to see if there is any help you can receive. Some communities have programs to help mothers in this situation.

Also check to see about anger management classes. Again the local hospital may have this, or a local psychologist, or even a local community college.

If there is a Catholic Charities agency in your area that would be a another possible resource. Another place to ask about resources is your own family doctor.

Wherever you can get local help, look into it right away.

On the spiritual side you might try praying a prayer to rebuke the spirit of anger and frustration. "Rebuking Particular Spirits" prayer is located in our Catalog linked below.

See if you can get a babysitter a go spend some time before the Blessed Sacrament (at least once per week if possible). When you are there before our Lord talk to Him about this and ask Him to help you with your temper. Also spend part of the time in quiet. Let the rays of the Son that radiate from the Eucharist come over you. God tells us in Psalm 46:10, "Be still and know that I am God".

Do not delay in following this advice. You MUST seek help as soon as possible.

We will be in prayer for you.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
