Laying on of hands George Sunday, July 18, 2004

Question:

I submitted the previous question about the martial arts group and I just discovered that they were not teaching "Budo" or "Koryu". I am concerned about the "laying on of hands".

During my "new age" days I went to a witch for "auric healing". In addition the head master of the martial art style did also laid hands on me. Both those times I agreed because I thought it was for healing. Another time a former martial art student placed his hand on my shoulder (against my will) at a local bar, he was clearly into pagan stuff because he had a detailed tattoo of a penatgram on his head.

I told this to two preists. One suggested that they could have placed curses on me. My current spiritual conuselor doesn't think its a big deal since I am receiving communion everyday and confession weekly. The vocation retreat director suggessted I have deliverance prayers prayed over me reguarly and frequent vists to Blessed Sacrament. They don't have Eucharist Adoration at my current Church. I am not sure what to do.

I really like my spiritual director. He has helped me so much. He says my spiritual problems are coming from my medical condition called Obessive Complusive thought disorder. It really upsets me when I am in Church or thinking about Holy things and sponatnously start thinking "blasphemous" thoughts against my will. I immediately start praying for God's help. My spiritual director says that is from my condition and it will go away in time. I trust him but I asked him if I could see an exorcist to ease my concern, he agreed but says he does not see any signs of possesion. Is this the right move?

I am concerned because I read somewhere that if you get headaches and stomach pains that could be a sign of possesion. I am I over reacting? I only got the pains when I was on a website trying to warn other martail artists about the dangers of Kosho.

Dear George:

We do need to be careful about allowing other to "lay hands" on us for prayer. We are not talking here about a person merely touch you, but a person "laying hands" on you to pray over you.

Going to a witch is certainly a possible entry point for demons to harass you. This needs to be confessed (if not already), renounced, and prayers to claim back the ground Satan may have gained in your life because of your involvement with a witch.

With such limited information there really is no way I can ascertain whether or not any of this involves demonic harassment. One thing is for sure, that "merely" receiving communion everyday and confession every week may not necessarily get rid of any demonic activity. This is a great practice and one that I recommend to our clients, and one that will work in many cases, but it is not a magic bullet. Some demonization cases require additional counseling.

Going before the Blessed Sacrament in Adoration is an excellent thing to do and can certainly help you. Your parish does not have to have Eucharistic Adoration for you to do this. Just sit in front of the Tabernacle; Jesus is there. Adore Jesus residing in the Tabernacle.

I think that one of the concerns your spiritual director may have is your diagnosis of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. The religious version of this diagnosis is called "Scrupulosity". The priest may be thinking your concerns are a result of this. He should not, however, presume that.

Nevertheless, you do give an example of over reaction concerning the headaches and stomach pains. These are not really signs of demonization in-and-of-themselves. Anything can cause those pains and quite often headaches and stomach pains are somatic (emotionally produced).

As for the correlation of getting these pains when you were discussing the dangers of Kosho, this is mere coincidence. We must always remember the number one rule of logic: "Correlation does NOT equal causation."

If you really feel a concern and a need, there is no harm in praying some spiritual warfare prayers just in case. You can find those prayers in our Spiritual Warfare Prayer Catalog.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
