Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Meg Thursday, July 24, 2008

Question:

What do you think of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)? Is it safe and acceptable for a Catholic to undergo this in order to overcome past trauma and PTSD?

Thanks, and God bless you and your work.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Meg:

There are some scientific studies that show an effectiveness for EMDR for PTSD. But the cognitive restructuring that is behind EMDR may be the real causal factor in its effectiveness. And, the normal Cognitive therapies that are already used with PTSD are shown to be effective and have a solid track record.

The verdict is still out, I think, on EMDR.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
