Can my family be cursed with Drug Addiction? melanie Friday, October 17, 2008

Question:

I have recently been researching whether a curse could have been put on my family for drug addiction. My Uncle died from an overdose, but lived a terrible life of drug addiction, and two of his sons have carried this on as well. My brother has struggled with addiction progressvely getting worse, and within the last two years has lost his wife, business, car, and faith. We were raised Catholic and in a good loving home. Almost every son of my mothers brothers snd sisters, except two, are plagued with addiction. WHAT DO WE DO TO STOP THIS EVIL?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Melanie:

I am sorry to hear about these addiction problems in your family. Addiction involves complex dynamics. The primary reason for generational addiction involves perhaps a genetic pre-disposition for the addiction, but more directly it involves the children watching addicted parents or other family members. The thinking errors and destructive behavioral patterns are learn by child from the adults around them. Thus, it is not surprising that your Uncle's sons got into addiction.

It is possible that your brother was influenced by what happen to the Uncles and his sons, but it could be just one of those things. People make bad decisions for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes those bad decisions have dire consequences.

The cycle needs to be broken. Your brother and your cousins need to get sober. Only they can decide to do that. Most often an addict will not wake up until he has lost everything, and sometimes even that does not wake him up.

Pray that those in your family who are addicted will do what they need to do to become sober.

Amongst these natural causes of addiction can also be demonic influence. In that regard the Rebuking Particular Spirit prayer in our Spiritual Warfare Prayer Catalog linked below may be helpful. There is also a Breaking Spells and Curses prayer if you think there might be a curse involved.

While you may and should pray these prayers for your family members, it would be best to also have the parents of each of the people pray the prayers since the parents have spiritual authority over their household (family).

Ideally, the addiction persons themselves ought to be in prayer.

Encourage, not nag, for the addicted family members to seek help to become sober and pray for them. But always remember, God does not force anyone to do anything. Each person must make the decision to be sober themselves.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
